My name is Suzanne Abrahams ( SUZ )
Muskita Baits are carved and painted in the Thousand Islands on the St.
Lawrence River (Ontario, Canada), and in Red Creek, New York, south of
Lake Ontario. I am a carpenter and began woodworking at age 11. I build
furniture and other stuff, and carve santos & retablos, crosses, birds,
fish, angels and devils. My baits and spearing decoys are made from
scrap wood that would otherwise get burned in the stove. I also use
hardwood parts and other handy items for lure bodies and many of my
earliest baits were cut from paintbrush handles or made from twigs and
dowels. "Fishability" is important to me and so is creativity. A lure
should catch fish. A lure should please the fisherman's eye. If it does
one or the other well, it's a good lure; if it does both it's a great
lure! I enjoy collecting vintage and modern baits, both handmade and
factory, especially flyrod baits and any lures in original cardboard
boxes. Carving baits for trade has expanded my folk art collection
greatly. After working in isolation for many years I was pretty
surprised to find out that lots of other folks build their fishing lures
from scratch and that a market exists for contemporary handcrafted
tackle. It is a privilege to have creative and generous (and patient)
collectors as customers, and fellow lure-makers never fail to impress me
with their willingness to share ideas and tips and encourage new
hobbyists to take up the adventure. Making your own fishing tackle is a
joy, and catching fish with it is a blast! Thank you, Suz Abraham
